Cerne Giant Festival – Water Beings: From Nature Worship to the Environmental Crisis

Professor Veronica Strang is affiliated with the University of Oxford’s School of Anthropology and her research is focused on human-environmental relationships, in particularly societies’ relationships with water. She has conducted ethnographic research in Australia, New Zealand and the UK (on the River Stour). Her books include ‘Water, Nature and Culture, and ‘The Meaning of Water’. Her illustrated talk focuses on her new book, ‘Water Beings: from nature worship to the environmental crisis’, a major comparative study of water deities from around the world – including the UK.

Professor Strang has worked closely with artist Sasha Constable in the creation of the Cerne Giant Dragon tisue and willow sculpture during the Cerne Giant Festival..
