DESCRIPTION:The fi nal meeting of the Cerne Historical Society before its summer break will be\nheld on Thursday 25th June and will feature a talk by Bernard Paull in which he\nwill highlight some of the delights of Dorset’s many bridges. Bernard is the author\nof Dorset Bridges Spanning the Ages and promises us a journey along the rivers\,\nhighways and byways of Dorset looking at old bridges and a few newer ones. Some\nof what he will cover will be historic\, some engineering\, and some based on his own\nexperiences. An interesting evening will be in prospect.\nAdmission to the meeting is free for paid-up members and £5 for visitors. Wine and\nsoft drinks will be available at a modest charge from 7pm onwards. If you haven’t\npaid your 2026 subscription for 2026 or haven’t yet joined the society\, you will be able to do so on the night.

DESCRIPTION:A RIVER CERNE ARTS PROJECT A ‘River Mapping Day’ will be held at Cerne Abbas\nChurch on Friday 12th June. Members of the wider community are welcome\, and\nencouraged to contribute. This is part of the ‘Bubbles and Squeaks’ project run\nby the Dorset arts organisation\, Emerald Ant. Cerne Abbas First School is one of\neight participating schools in West Dorset who will learn about their local river. The\nproject will end with a celebratory processional event along the river in September\non a date to be confi rmed. An integral part of the project will be collecting stories\,\nobservations\, and memories from local adults. Do you have a story to share about\nthe Cerne River? Have you seen any special wildlife on the banks or in the water?\nMaybe you have a house on the river\, a flood story\, or a rare historical fact?\nEmerald Ant is funded by Dorset Council\, the Arts Council of England\, National\nLottery Heritage Fund\, trusts and foundations\, and special interest groups such\nas the Palaeontological Association\, National Landscapes\, Jurassic Coast Trust and\nothers. Emerald Ant’s projects bring in experts such as archaeologists\, geologists\,\nrangers\, Dorset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust. Groups then work with our\nartists to create exciting art for community events. The creative director is Sarah\nButterworth. Please come to Cerne church between 10 am and 12 noon on 12th\nJune to make your mark on the map! DESCRIPTION:This month’s meeting will feature a talk by Dr Martin Smith. Martin is an Associate Professor\nof Biological Anthropology at Bournemouth University\, and he will be presenting\nthe findings of his studies into the Iron Age people of Dorset. Based on an analysis\nof DNA taken from the excavated remains taken from a pre-Roman burial ground\,\nMartin will reveal some surprising details of the local societies that flourished in\nthe years before the invasion. His talk promises to be both interesting and thought\nprovoking and is one not to be missed.\nAdmission to the meeting is free for paid-up members and £5 for visitors. DESCRIPTION:You are very welcome to join us every Monday in term time 2pm to 4pm in the\nChurch. Our members do various crafts\, but especially knitting and crochet. If\nyou want to join us but do not have a project of your own maybe you would like\nto knit for charity. Wanted are 6 inch squares for making into blankets knitted in\ndouble knit yarn\, scarves\, gloves\, hats and children’s jumpers/cardigans\, etc. The\ncharity we support welcomes any handmade articles you would like to knit.
