On Saturday April 25 at St. Mary’s Church, the talented trio MUSE (Richard Frewer, singer; David Price, pianist and Andrew Bannerman, reader) will present their programme LIGHTS OUT about the Great War. Through poetry, song, letters and recollections, we are taken into the minds and hearts of those who lived and died in this cataclysm, which engulfed Europe and beyond. One of the names on the tablet in the church will appear in the programme, literally bringing home how the War affected our community.

LIGHTS OUT is not a solemn commemoration, but an eclectic mixture of tragedy, irony, pathos and even farce, featuring some of our greatest poets and composers, like Owen, Hardy, Elgar and Vaughan Williams, but also some of the unknown men and women, who bore witness to the heroism and agony of the time.

LIGHTS OUT has already been performed to enthusiastic audiences in London, Bath and Cambridge. A typical comment is

“The emotions of the Great War were superbly covered – from the exuberant early days, through the humour and songs to boost morale and recruitment, the uneasy doubts, the horrible reality of battle, to the silence of grief and loss at the end.”
