Clubs & Societies

Cerne Abbas is home for the many clubs and societies that flourish in the Cerne Valley. Their meetings usually take place in the Cerne Abbas Village Hall  which was completed in 2006 and is probably the largest and best equipped in West Dorset.  Scroll down to read about them all.

Cerne Historical Society

The Cerne Historical Society  was formed in 1988 following the Abbey Millennium celebrations in 1987. It now has over 100 members and produces a lively programme of talks and visits on a wide range of local history topics. For the 2017 Programme, click HERE

Moviola and Theatre Club

Dorset Moviola in association with Cerne Abbas Theatre Club brings a selection of blockbuster movies to the Cerne Village hall through the winter months. Usually held on the first Monday of the month, tickets are available at the door and are priced at £5. Cerne Abbas Short Mat Bowls

Short mat bowls is a modern version of bowls played indoors and can be played by any age from young to old. The Cerne Abbas Short Mat Bowls Club has more than 30 members, and offers a mixture of social and competitive bowling on the three mats Cerne Abbas Village Hall can accommodate. Artsreach

Artsreach  is Dorset’s rural touring arts organisation, giving rural communities, including Cerne Abbas, the opportunity to see and participate in high quality arts events in their own villages. Liaising with performers and village promoters we put on live performances covering small and large-scale theatre, live music, dance, comedy, literature, film and puppet shows.

Cerne Valley Scout Group

There are three sections of the Cerne Valley Scout Group and all meet on Mondays during school term time at Cerne Abbas Village Hall.  Beaver Scouts meet from 5pm to 6.15pm and are aged 6-8 years old.  Cub Scouts meet at 6.15 until 7.45pm and are aged 8-11 years old.  Scouts also meet at 6.15 until 7.45pm and are aged 11-14 years old.  If you would like to know more about joining please email; Ron Wilkes at ron.wilkes51@btinternet.com.

Pilates

A Pilates class is held on Thursday morning in the Cerne Abbas Village Hall. Classes are run by Carolyn Brettell on 07931 828824.

Youth Group

The Youth Group meets on Fridays in school term times. It caters for all children aged 9 years and upwards. The Chair is Mrs Moira Pinder on 01300 341255.

Crusaders

Cerne Crusaders is part of the national organisation called Urban Saints. The club is open to all ages, but appeals mainly to younger children. The Leaders provide lots of fun and games, films, craft activities, Bible discussion, and occasional outings. Crusaders provide all necessary Insurances and CRB checks and meet on Thursday evenings in term time from 5.00pm to 6.45pm in the Village Hall. New members are welcome at any meeting. The Giant Social

Created and supported by the Cerne Abbas Surgery, this social group meets on the second Friday of each month. Meetings are held at 3 p.m. in the Cerne Abbas Village Hall and feature visiting speakers, tea and cakes and a popular raffle. So if you like a good chat and meeting with acquaintances old and new from the locality, you will be very welcome. Volunteers are also needed to help with catering and organisation. Badminton

We are a friendly badminton club who welcome all abilities. We meet on Mondays in the Village Hall from 7.30-10.00pm. We are actively looking for men and ladies who would like to play in league matches.  We currently play in the West Dorset League and the South East Somerset League. Why not come along and find out more.

Cricket

Cerne Valley Cricket Club enjoys a lovely ground set in a small valley just to the east of Cerne Abbas in Simsay field. The club runs two teams in the Saturday Dorset FP league. For the less competitive, the Sunday team has regular fixtures against local teams. During the week, usually Wednesdays, the Evening League team plays in a local league. New members are very welcome. Cerne Abbas Discussion Club

The Cerne Abbas Discussion Club has been operating since 1943. It provides a forum in which the all-male members can meet together, hear interesting talks from a broad range of speakers and enter into discussion of the topics raised. It meets ever third Tuesday evening between October and March. Anyone interested in joining should contact an existing member or the Secretary, Roy Burnham, on 01300 341147.

Cerne Abbas Society for Horticulture (CASH)

The Cerne Abbas Horticultural Society (CASH)  is an active gardening society with a membership of about 100 serving anyone interested in sharing their thoughts and experience in matters horticultural. 2016 was their 25th Anniversary. Enquiries to the Secretary, Penny Gostelow on 01300 341135.

Cerne Valley WI

Cerne Valley WI was formed in April 2016 and already has an exciting programme of speakers for the year. All meetings take place in Cerne Abbas Village Hall and commence at 7.30pm.  Visitors are welcome to come along and find out more .  Non-members £3  For more information contact, Martha Vipond 01300 341 980
